Autumn Equinox – Celebrate Mabon

By Jana Moonflower

The light descends into the tomb
a heart beats in a mother’s womb
son of light! precious babe divine
be born anew, in spring sunshine

HISTORY & MEANING

Mabon September 21-23 The Wheel turns once more to Mabon, the Autumnal Equinox & the first day of Fall. After a night of balance, night will become longer than day.
Mabon is a time to honor the elders, a time of the Mysteries, of equilibrium, change, reaping & most of all, a time of giving thanks for what we’ve harvested this year & this life. The Goddess is in Her Mother aspect, pregnant with the God, yet She grows older, more mature, ready to enter her Crone aspect. Mabon has been called the ‘assumption of the Crone,’ for now it is the dark face of the Goddess which begins to dominate.” The birds migrate south while, in splendid full color, the leaves fall. Mabon, the end of the grain harvest, marks the second harvest festival of the Celtic/Pagan year and is one of the Quarter Days on the Wheel, a lesser Sabbat & a Low Holiday in modern Witchcraft. In olden times, pagans couldn’t determine the exact equinox date as, with today’s technology, we can now.

Historically, the Mabon celebration was held on the fixed calendar date of September 25th, and, since the Sabbats were held from sundown to sundown, the festivities began on the sundown of September 24th.

The true Fall or Autumnal Equinox lies somewhere between September 20th and 23rd. This is the time when the sun crosses directly over the equator and heads south. The exact day varies each year, because the earth wobbles slightly on its axis.

The actual equinox point is the day when the sun enters Libra, the sign of the Balance or Scale, a very germane symbol for this single day when day and night are equal & balanced. Today, many Pagans hold their celebrations at the true equinox point instead of the historical September 25th.

Mabon is regarded as an official turning point of the Wheel, as we enter into the time when dark is dominant. The waning of the Sun is now more obvious as days grow shorter & shorter. After this night of balance, nights will once more be longer than days.

Of the many harvest customs the most common was the corn dolly. Nowadays, Pagans often equate the harvested grain with the sacrificed God, however, the last sheaf was more often personified as female. It was referred to as the kern baby, the cailleach (coy-luck, Irish Gaelic), old woman, wheat mother, shorn maiden(english), wheat bride, ivy bride, wheat girl etc. This was made from the last sheaf of grain that was cut and was thought to contain the spirit of vegetation whose energy remained within the grain. The dolly was hung up to preside over the harvest feast then was put in a position of honor in the home and preserved through the winter. When the following spring arrived, it was plowed back into the fields to insure a plentiful crop in the coming year. In other places it was ritually burned and then the ashes scattered over the fields.

There were various customs for making the corn dolly from the last sheaf. Sometimes a tuft of wheat was left uncut, braided it, then the men threw scythes at it until it was cut. . other times, the dolly was made from the already cut stalks. The reaper of the last sheaf was picked by chance. Some customs required that the last sheaf must be cut by a man, others, by a woman and sometimes by a group who threw their scythes at the sheaf, the watchers turning their eyes away so that the Grain Goddess didn’t know who made the final stroke.

In Germany the last sheaf was formed and dressed as a female, then solemnly carried to preside over the threshing. In North Africa, a straw figure was set in the fields while the women reaped, then mounted warriors abducted it for a pretend marriage (reminiscent of the Greek Persephone).

The Norse celebrated by making bread dough images of Freyr and Freyja, and sacrificing them to the Elves. This is also the time when grapes are harvested, pressed & made into wine. Wine & grapevines were considered sacred by early Pagans. The followers of the God Dionysus honored wine & the grape as symbols of transformation and rebirth. Customarily, wine is associated with the God & bread with the Goddess.

In British folklore this time is connected with Herne the Hunter, who leads a wild chase through the forest, bringing chaos and change and in Ireland, this is the time of the goose har-vest where giving gifts of goose meat to the poor is an ancient practice.

Ways to Celebrate Mabon
Tend your garden, thank the plants for their bounty, lovingly harvest what’s ready; then store seeds to replant in spring. Walk in local wild places & forests with friends or family, gather leaves, acorns, berries, dry plants, seeds & pods for home & altar decorations, sprinkle some seeds & grains on the ground in a symbolic figure as an offering of the Mother’s gifts to the birds & other animals.

Celebrate the harvest of vine, wine & apples with a feast, collect a basket of goodies from the garden, bake a loaf of bread for the feast shaped like a sun or with a sun cut in the dough before baking, invite friends & loved ones to celebrate abundance with you at a pot-luck meal of thanksgiving; At the feast, give special‘ honor & thanks to the elders in your life who have given so much of their time & energy to you

Those less fortunate should not be left out, share your abundance with a neighbor who has no garden, or who had a rough year; gather donations of food &/or clothing to food pantries or organizations which serve the homeless. Small packages of food & drink given to a homeless person will make their day!  Decorate with acorns, gourds, oak sprigs, pine & cypress cones, ears of Indian corn, wheat, fruit, nuts, a horn of plenty & a small rustic basket full of various colors & kinds of dry leaves.

Make a Mabon wreath or Sun Wheel in the remembrance of the wheel of the year, of life & the promise of rebirth, both in the spring & in our next lives. Wear garlands of leaves & use pieces of harvested grain for hair ornaments or to put in buttonholes. Mock sacrifice of the wicker-man: honor the corn spirit residing in the last sheaf of grain or stalk of corn by dressing it in fine cloth, or weave it into a wicker-man form.

Give this effigy a name, like John Barleycorn. Then, with rejoicing, burn this in celebration of the harvest and rebirth.

Autumn Equinox  Potpourri

20 drops rose geranium oil
15 drops pine oil
10 drops rosemary oil
1 cup oak moss
1.5 cups dry red & yellow fall leaves
5-10 acorns
2 cups dried marigold blossoms
1 cup dried rosemary
1 cup dry rose petals & buds
1/2 cup dried pine needles
1 or 2 small pine cones.
Mix the oil in the oak moss, add the other ingredients. Stir well, store in a glass or ceramic container (not plastic). cover tightly.

Prosperity Spell

Prepare a green candle, by rubbing it with oil & carving prosperity signs on it (your initials, birth sign, $$$, runes like FEOH/FEH/FEHU, JARA/JERA and/or ODAL/OTHEL/OTHILA)while visualizing prosperity & abundance. Encircle the candle with pieces of cinnamon stick & nuts (not peanuts, best are acorns nutmegs and brazil nuts).

Surround this with any combination of chamomile, mint (best is bergamot), oregon grape and/or cinquefoil sprigs.
Burn benzoin, musk, cinnamon and /or wood aloe incense (any combination).
Relax and visualize abundance flowing into your life.
Meditate on just what abundance and prosperity mean to you.
Remove any emotional or mental blocks to prosperity and abundance you may have by visualizing a river that has been dammed up, causing all the land below to become a desert.
Slowly open the dam and allow the waters of abundance to flow into your life.
Allow the candle to burn down, then bury what’s left of the wax, nuts, sprigs, etc. in the ground as a gift to Mother Earth.

Blessed Be

September 2011 Astro Influences

Monthly column highlighting this month's Astro Information

HAPPY BIRTHDAY VIRGO and LIBRA

as we welcome September 2011 the 9th month of a number 4 year.  this month brings us the energy of 13 or 4.  So, expect many things which have been about security, monies and finances to be dealt with during this next 60 days.

Use Sapphires and Aquamarine to keep you on your path this month.  For those of you who need grounding and centering, how about picking up some black tourmaline, jet, or obsidian?  These will center you into manifesting and completing goals.

The Colors for September are Gray and Navy blue and until the 23rd of this month, which will be the Fall Equinox we are officially still in the SOUTH or the time of summer.  IT is not only time to get going, it seems mandatory that we do so doesn’t it?

The animal totems right now  are the Coyote and the Brown Bear, giving us both cunning and strength and courage which relates to the astrological Earth sign of Virgo.   On the 23rd  with the Autumnal Equinox we enter the time of the West, the sun enters the  Sign of Libra and we enter the time of  fall, and then the Raven (messenger) arrives along with the Grizzly bear so we can more easily search out hidden things and have the courage to confront and overcome obstacles.   (keyword I balance) .

Expect relationships to be filled with lessons this early part of the month as Mercury now direct in Leo must travel back to 1 Virgo where it retrograded last month .. So, until the 9th of September we are in the mercury retrograde shadow attempting to bring us to wholeness by opening our hearts and our lives.

With our ears and lives still ringing with the changes in the sky, 8  planets and asteroids  retrograde and a strong sense that the world is changing balance may be in short supply.   IF you must,  confront others, please do it gently as possible this month.

When planets (the big ones at least) begin to move forward we feel the urge to get going, do something, anything and some rough aspects this month may have you looking outwards for your answers rather than inwards where the answers truly are for you. Pluto moving direct on the 16th will bring some issues which have been hidden to the surface.

Beginning the month retrograde planetary powers are:

Jupiter (expansion in Taurus)

Uranus (Change in Aries)

Neptune (Vision in Aquarius)

Vesta (Sacred connections in Aquarius)

Chiron (the wounded healer in Pisces)

Ceres (nurturing in Pisces)

Pallas Athena (the intellect in Capricorn)

Pluto (Transformation in Capricorn)   all retrograde much of your energy should be directed inward towards reconnecting to source in order to heal within before working outwards with others..

On September 7th the moon void of course, or timed out in Capricorn from 1:35pm use care and avoid confrontations if possible.   On the 25th the moon moves v/c at 12:47pm and not into another sign until the 26th at 9:51pm .  Void of course days are oftentimes not what we would expect.  And with this being the dark of the moon, these 2 days might be a great time to take off and really connect to sources within self.  Since they are on Sunday and Monday that might be easier than usual for us to have some extra down time.

September 8th as Mercury re enters Virgo we finally begin to get some answers about what the last 60 days have been really about in our news and maybe with Significant others in our lives.  On September 14th Venus the planet of love moving into Libra cools things down a bit more and makes compromises more favorable.  On the 16th as Pluto moves direct things begin to really pick up speed.  And on the 18th as Mars the planet of energy enters the fiery sign of Leo you should be ready to have some fun, get out a bit more and enjoy Fall 2011.

Mercury the planet of ideas and communication into Libra on the 25th brings us even more into balance and by the end of the month you are going to be experiencing more clarity and things moving a bit faster for you personally.

The urge towards Perfection is strong this month and perfection?  Well, expectations are the road to many things but our expectations are rarely met by others.  Rather, instead how about working towards finding work which gives you joy and also maybe being open to reconnecting to your own personal dreams with this energy of Uranus making a rough aspect with Pluto, asking us to Change ourselves and by that act transform the world.

The Full Harvest moon September 12th brings relationship issues forwards with some

Illusion added with the Sun in Virgo and the Moon in Dreamy Pisces, Look for facts to be

A bit confused over the next 2 weeks.  But confusion and NOT knowing are often the key to

Really being open to something new.  Our theme for the last 2 years has been to do something you have never done before to have something you have never had before and this energy increases this month.

The dark of the moon magical days this month are the 25th and 26th until that New moon at 4:09am PDT on the 27th at 4 degrees of Libra .    There are lots of relationship energies working during those days to assist you to be a bit more balanced and promote better relationships.    These are perfect times to sit down and begin to create your next step, or the plans for your next step.  Dark of the moon is magic wish time but not a good time for beginning new projects.  If you can wait until..

The New moon on September 27th with the sun and moon at 4 Degrees of Libra is going to assist you to see things much clearer and really helping us make headway with projects requiring cooperation from others. New moons are seed planting times and finally things will begin to make a bit more sense by the First of October.

I always honor Rosh Hashanah as another New Year but unlike our popular belief of a NEW beginning type of New Year here in the United States.   I use this Jewish New year in the way it has been used from ancient times as a time for introspection.  It is for me a time of looking back at the past year and planning the changes I intend to make in the new year.  To me this time each year is my Purge the old and reconnect to source and revise and repair whatever needs changing in my life so September 29th is a very special type of new year for me.  I ask you all to welcome new relationships and recognize that what has shifted in our world is taking us towards a happier and more balanced future.  AND you are part of the change you want to be by working on your own relationships with self, which truly is the only one we can do anything about isn’t it?

July 2011 Astrological Influences

Monthly column highlighting this month's Astro Informationby Carol Barbeau

We open July 2011  A cardinal CROSS of energy asks us to balance intuition with Passion and action with feelings.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY Cancer and Leo Sun Signs and for all of us welcome to a very different July as we begin with the very rare 3rd eclipse of the season in the sign of Cancer.   June brought us Gemini, Sagittarius  eclipses as one might expect with the lunar nodes in these signs and NOW:   we have a VERY  rare, 3rd out of sign eclipse indicating a very different next 6 months for us. (Yes, eclipses reverberate for 6 months)
July is always a pretty Hot and passionate Astrological month for us and this year it is even more so. With Mercury, how we think and Uranus (change) as well as the North node, what we need to do all in FIRE:   On the 22nd as the sun moves from Cancer to Leo the desire for action and to move towards our desires grows much stronger.

To start the month
We begin the month with Water, water, water, Emotions, intuition, feelings and Stronger connections with source.  The Sun in Cancer brings us a new moon solar eclipse at 9 degrees of Cancer on the 1st   Just as Mercury (how we process and think) moves into Fiery Leo.   The only way to navigate this month is a powerful desire to KNOW We are safe, to move ever towards what makes our souls sing and recognize that true safety and security lie only within our minds to create that sense within self.

We begin the month with the Sun, Neptune, and Chiron all in Water.  Asking us to connect with intuition to heal and to help us move past the fear and discomfort of our world outside of ourselves and create a sense of Self connection within.  July 3r Venus the planet of Love moves to Cancer and again we are asked to explore our sensitive natures in order to be open to receive as well as give love.

Tools to Choose
How do we do that?  Colors which work well with intuition and peace and calming are blues, greens, silver, soft and healing shades of the blue greens.  How to move within?  Well, meditation, prayer, nature, and staying away from people who are gloom bringers will work well.   Pearls, Rose Quartz and soft and gentle stones will assist as well as Obsidian, Smoky Quartz, and Amethyst to help clear negative energy .

On the 9th Uranus the planet of change moves Retrograde in the FIERY sign of Aries asking us to again, begin to create the passion within ourselves in order when this planet moves direct on December 9th.  But, know that many of these changes will begin to Bloom within you before this date, do the inner work and watch what happens with this magical water and fire energy going on inside of us and in the outer world.
Fire colors are Orange, Red, Yellow, Gold and brilliant tones.

Fire and Water can make the most powerful energy,   Steam    and we must get used to this energy because it will not be going away anytime soon.
Fire is the element of magic and using scents like clove, frankincense, peppermint, rosemary will bring us closer to our own personal earth & Fire magic.  Harness this Magic to have fire, (Passion in our lives) and use the stone Kyanite to Raise Consciousness, Peridot, which allows an easier flow of information from higher self, and Iolite, which clears negativity and they work equally well with Fire and water energy..
Further pushing us into the watery (intuitive) realm is the planet of intuition and imagination Neptune  moving retrograde through Pisces until November 9th .    Expect emotions to become stronger only in order to act as guideposts for you.  AND for those blockages in your plans to begin to disappear if you are truly paying attention to your feelings.

Powerful Eclipse 7-1-2011
The eclipse 7/1 is a powerful indicator of the next 6 months and that we shall need to be working on the inside of our lives and our minds much more strongly.  We begin a new seed planting energy with this eclipse about HEALTHY SELF CARE which is what the sign of Cancer is about.  How can we nurture others without this we are asked as we move forward into an ever increasingly busy world
On July 14th we have a we have a FULL moon, and, this full moon is with the Sun (the light) in Cancer, watery and safety conscious, and the moon in Capricorn which is practical and down to earth.  We are asked by this full moon to let go of all that is not authentically us for the next 2 weeks until the New moon on the 30th of July in Fiery Leo.

Leo New Moon
July 28th and 29th and 30th until 11:40am PDT when we have the Leo New moon are balsamic moon days and great days to make wishes, plans, meditate and begin to create the space for that New moon on July 30th.  New Moons are seeding times when things grow and increase and normally a great time for new projects.  And, with the sun and Moon in Leo for this new moon we are called FORWARD into NEW action and urged to have fun, get passion into our lives, and to get going creating something, anything, just get going… but…

Chiron Moving backwards in the sign of Pisces until it again moves direct on November 10th, as well as Neptune retrograde asks that we move within and find connections to our wise and ancient soul voice.  So, I will ask of you to run your actions and decisions through your inner voice, and you are going to have the most outstanding July in your life.   I was once told we always pay, we pay attention or we pay.. If you do not listen to your inner self, expect to get the lessons.  NOTHING is more powerful than inner connection and the gift of this new time upon this planet for us all is ABOUT inner knowing which will create a totally new world if we just allow it to happen.

Eclipses ask that we eclipse something in our lives and with the Nodes in Gemini (ideas) and Sagittarius (our truth) and the eclipse in Cancer (healthy self care) and planets moving into Leo (the desire to create)  how can we not have a great month?

A Month of Master Spiritual Relationships
Recognize July 2011 is the 7th month in a number 4 year making this an 11 month of Master Spiritual relationships.  So, first create that master spiritual relationship within self and then allow it to move out through you into the world.  You are creator by your thoughts, and feelings , leading to what you do, or your actions, is the message of July 2011
