[E] ver see little reddish-brown sputniks in a crystal shop? They are the ones with all the flat-headed crystals coming from a central point creating a porcupine effect. That is Aragonite. The type that naturally forms in a sputnik shape is one of the more fascinating finds of the crystal world. Other forms of Aragonite are coral-shaped and fan-shaped. Since there is such a difference in the various forms, I have focused mainly on the sputniks for this month.
Aragonite is a calcium carbonate related to calcite but crystallizing in orthorhombic patterns. The sputniks found in Morocco are a clear crystal with a reddish-brown appearance, almost as if they were dipped. Jack Frasl described them in Crystal Communion as looking like a dandelion head gone to seed. Aragonite comes in several other colors as well: icy blue, sky blue, golden, purple and white. These colors are found in Spain, Namibia, Britain, Colorado and Arizona. The stone was named after a town in Spain called Aragon. With a hardness of 7 it is good for beads, animal carvings, stone eggs, tumbled stones, and other shapes.
[I] n researching the metaphysical attributes, the main theme I found discussed by most authors of crystal books was Aragonite’s ability to raise one to a higher plane of consciousness. The results a person receives from this are a reduction in stress, a comfort in being real without drama, and living from the truth. It was also described as helping one to be more patient. I liked what Melody had to say in Love is in the Earth, “It can, when consciously directed, help one to maintain strict discipline within ones activities.” That all adds up to a great formula for living.
Another aspect of Aragonite energy is its Earth connection. It can be used to help ground ones energy and to become more stabilized. With beads and carved pendants, it is easy to wear when you feel a need to be more connected, mentally clear and balanced.
[M] y own experience with a sputnik-shaped Aragonite was unique. First, I felt energy from my third eye radiating out horizontally. As always, I asked the stone to share its purpose. I heard, “I am conscience.” Puzzled by the meaning of this, I waited. A vision began to unfold showing two tall white doors. As they opened before me, I saw a dark, empty-looking room. I moved into the doorway and felt the energy in the room was filled with memories. It was an amazing feeling.
I hope you will find a piece of aragonite and meditate with it. Ask to see into your conscience, if you feel you are ready. The gifts it brings are the release of stress and anxiety, and a way to be in touch with your truth. An Aragonite sputnik is a valuable addition to a Crystal Tool Box, a great conversation piece, and a very cute stone.
